Ad-Populum

How so, says you? Have you ever heard of a fallacy called “ad-populum?” This fallacy comes from the Latin that means “appeal to the people.” This argument is basically a fallacious argument that says, because the “vast majority” of people affirm a certain thing, that the thing in question must be true. Someone using the ad-populum argument might say something like, “your view can’t be true, because 90% of people believe the opposite to be true.” In other words, the 10% has to be wrong because after all, 90% couldn’t be wrong. (Like slavery in the U.S. hmmmmmmm..)

Who are the kooks?

I have read numerous books related to Darwin’s theory of evolution. I even read Origin of Species years ago when I was the Headmaster or a Classical Christian School. Many things of course have been discovered since Darwin’s classic was written. The cell was a mystery to Darwin (no fault of his own), science just didn’t have the technology at the time to look inside of it. Evolutionary table tennis has been taking place between creationists and evolutionists for over 150 years now. Some on the evolutionists side are hard-core atheistic evolutionists who maintain that evolution created everything from a single celled organism and has fanned out into the diversity we behold today. Others try to bridge the gap between “science” and “religion” by claiming that God used evolution to create everything that we see (theistic evolution). Others claim that the bible teaches that men didn’t come from monkeys and that man was a special creation of God made on the sixth day, with a soul. Although there may be some similarities between men and certain animals, this view tells us that the designer used some of the same framework, rather than everything evolving from a single-celled organism over time. Even though there is much disagreement we are constantly told that the vast majority of scholarship and our institutions of higher learning affirm monkey-to-man, macroevolution.

Could the vast majority of scholarship be wrong?

I have always wondered how so many people could believe that monkeys actually became men. There is nothing in the fossil record even remotely close to proving this theory and Darwin himself stated, “Geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely graduated organic chain; and this, perhaps, is the most obvious and gravest objection which can be urged against my theory. The explanation lies, as I believe, in the extreme imperfection of the geological record.” Since the time of Darwin the findings from geologists have been the same. A Cambrian explosion of life! If macroevolution happened and hybrid speciation took place over billions of years, the fossil record would be full of these transitional animals. However, nothing of the sort exists. How could such mass delusion exist in science? Enter the transgender movement.

Another Mass Delusion? Yep..

               “There are only two genders.” Up until just a couple of decades ago, this was a non-controversial statement. However, the transgender movement has been met in recent time with open arms by the scientific community and institutions of higher learning. Degrees in gender studies are being offered in many prestigious universities that push a “progressive” agenda. Children in public schools are being forced along with Christian teachers to call children by pronouns that don’t fit with their biological profile. One’s identity is said to now be in the mind and totally disconnected from their biology. Admiral Rachel Levine (a cross-dressing man who thinks he is a woman) was recently voted by USA Today to be the “woman of the year.” In sports across the country, men who think they are women are dominating female sports. While the war in Ukraine was going on a few weeks ago, it seemed as though more headlines were dominated by Lea Thomas, a man, dominating elite female swimming competitions.

“More than a Feeling….”

               I don’t think that anyone would deny that some people “feel” like they are a man trapped in a woman’s body, or vice versa. However, there are many times that our feelings don’t correspond with reality. It is both foolish and harmful for us to deny clear biological facts that God has made and spoken about in His Word, not to mention it also goes against simple common sense. Romans 1 has clearly warned us that denial of God and acceptance of rampant sexual immorality leads to dark reprobation of the heart. Romans 1:21-23 says, “For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.”

               Christian, in a world that’s gone mad, don’t let people use the ad-populum argument against you. When the heart is darkened by sin, even truth found through common grace is repelled by a rebel will. Keep preaching the gospel, keep believing the truth and don’t worry that you may be outnumbered. The TRUTH will be vindicated in the end.

“Therefore, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.” (Romans 1:24-25)
